Jinane was only 9 years old when she first entered the Fratelli Project, our educational center in Lebanon, run together with the Marist Brothers to support refugee children and vulnerable Lebanese.

Quiet and reserved, Jinane struggled with the trauma of forced migration and deep self-doubt. Her family had fled the war in Syria and lived in extremely precarious conditions. Jinane couldn’t read or write and was thus not accepted into national schools. She was afraid to speak and didn’t believe she had any value.

But that was only the beginning of her story.

Jinane’s journey began with a simple yet powerful connection: her teacher. From the very first day, the teacher saw beyond her difficulties. With patience, understanding, and constant encouragement, Jinane began to believe in herself. By the end of the school year, Jinane had undergone an extraordinary transformation. From a child who couldn’t read or write, she worked hard to become the top student in her class. She was no longer the shy girl who kept to herself; now she spoke with pride and moved with newfound confidence. Jinane’s story shows how an educational community can transform a life.
