St. Xavier Boys College, Mannar, Sri Lanka: Improving Education and Living Conditions

Ensuring access to school through a green residence in Mannar, Sri Lanka.

At St. Xavier Boys College in Mannar, northeastern Sri Lanka, many students come from Tamil families whose livelihoods depend on subsistence farming and fishing. These families often face economic hardships, and their children encounter significant challenges in accessing education. Due to poor road conditions and limited public transportation, students often spend hours commuting to school, sometimes changing multiple buses just to travel a few kilometers. In many cases, they cannot even afford public transportation, making regular attendance even more difficult. Additionally, many lack electricity at home, making it difficult to study and prepare for exams, which increases the risk of school dropout.

To address these challenges, a new residence for 80 secondary school students has been built at St. Xavier Boys College, thanks to the 8xmille funds to the Catholic Church. This residence provides a safe and stable environment where students can fully focus on their education without the daily obstacles of long commutes and inadequate study conditions. Within the residence, students have access to reliable electricity, clean water, and nutritious daily meals through the school cafeteria. They benefit from a healthy and supportive environment tailored for studying, allowing them to immerse themselves in their academic pursuits and future aspirations.

By living within walking distance of their school, students have the opportunity to dedicate themselves to their studies and build a better future for themselves, their families, and their community. Your support will help improve the living conditions of students in the hostel, ensuring they have access to clean water, energy, and nutritious meals every day.
